Want to immigrate to Canada? More people have Jobs in Canada than ever before!
For the first time ever, Statistics Canada reported that 18 million Canadians were working. Some industries are declining, while others are growing. Certain provinces saw gains in employment while others saw declines. Of course, no one can predict the future, but if you are looking to find a job and start a new life in Canada, it will be key to keep track of where the trends and opportunities may lie.
Of course, the biggest topic of conversation when it comes to jobs in Canada is Alberta. For the past many years the energy industry of Alberta has been the engine of the economy and the driver of international jobs. There is no doubt that the economy of Alberta and the oil patch is slowing down. Statistics Canada reported that last month Alberta recorded 11,000 job losses, 8,000 of which where in the natural resources industry. This may sound horrendous, but all is not dire. To put the situation into context, basically there are as many jobs today in Alberta as there were at this time last year.
However, it is important to note that not all areas of Alberta are suffering. For example, Edmonton, which is Alberta’s second largest city, appears to be on a very stable growth path. With a culturally diverse population of over 800,000 people, last month Edmonton added over 6,700 new jobs and has seen good growth in jobs over the last few months.
On the positive side, locations within Canada that have been historically attractive to international candidates are experiencing quite strong employment gains. Specifically, Ontario saw job gains of 29,000 this month, while British Columbia experienced an increase of 23,000 new jobs. How this translates into long-term job opportunities for international candidates in large cities such as Toronto and Vancouver still remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it will be key for international candidates to begin expanding their job searches back to larger cities in Ontario and British Columbia, especially in areas of employment such as wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food services.
If you want to know which area of Canada has the lowest unemployment rate, it is the province of Manitoba. With an unemployment rate of 5.3%, Manitoba continues to be an attractive job search location for international candidates. Specifically, the city of Winnipeg remains a well-kept secret and attractive option for international candidates. As we have previously written, Winnipeg might in fact be Canada’s next immigration paradise! Please see: http://www.uniivaa.com/74-is-winnipeg-canada-the-next-immigration-paradise
Overall, the situation in Canada is constantly changing, but as always, Canada remains an attractive location for international candidates. The economy remains stable, job growth is promising, and although you will need to start changing your search parameters, there are still many opportunities for international candidates looking to start a new life in Canada.
